Mukilteo council selects leadership, assigns committees as new term begins

At its Jan. 9 meeting the Mukilteo council confirmed Council President Moon and Vice President Richard Emery by acclamation and assigned members and alternates across internal committees and external liaisons; staff provided the committee list and council filled vacancies.
During routine business at the Jan. 9 Mukilteo City Council meeting, councilmembers nominated and confirmed leadership roles and completed committee and liaison assignments for 2026.
Councilmember Emery nominated Vice President Moon for council president; after a second nomination for Champion was declined, Moon was confirmed as council president without a roll call vote. Moon then nominated Richard Emery for vice president and Emery was likewise confirmed. The council discussed committee rosters — including community support grants, lodging tax advisory, co‑sponsorship grants, DEI commission liaison, historic preservation, long‑range financial planning, park & arts and planning commission liaisons — and assigned members and alternates to fill seats vacated by outgoing members.
Staff provided a packet listing the committees and a template for noting assignments; Director Steve (staff) said the packet included background about assignments and that staff will support transitions. Several councilmembers volunteered for specific committees and the council noted some committees meet infrequently.
These internal appointments set which members will attend meetings of advisory bodies and external boards on behalf of the city; where an appointment is to an external board, the city must provide a designee to represent Mukilteo at the relevant meetings.
