County increases senior-center contract for Mukilteo; staff proposes moving recreation programmer to full-time

City recreation staff told council the county has increased contracted funding for senior centers and that Mukilteo’s allocation rose substantially, allowing staff to propose moving a recreation programmer to full-time and adding programming resources.
Tony Trafenschuck, recreation and cultural services director, said the county’s contract-support increase means Mukilteo’s allocation is now $77,532 per year under the revised contract and described the change as roughly a 400% increase compared with past amounts under the earlier contract.
“ One of the proposals is to move our recreation programmer to a 1 FTE. There would be no additional cost to the city; it would be reimbursed under the county contract, ” Trafenschuck said, adding that the remainder of the increased funds — cited by staff as approximately $36,400 after the FTE change — would go to programming and operations, such as rental transportation for outings.
Council members asked about service expansions, building access, and how long the funding lasts. Staff said the funds are reimbursed monthly and are part of a five-year county allocation; they recommended bringing an agenda bill forward (on consent) so the city can accept the funding and amend the budget to authorize the programming and the FTE change.
No council vote was taken at the work session; staff said they would return with an agenda bill for council consideration.
