During citizen communications on Monday evening several residents urged the city to recognize the sudden closure of Woodland Preschool and the disruption it caused families.
A resident who was introduced to the podium as Ed told the council, "The news we got this week about Woodland Preschool shutting down completely without any public input, without teacher Lesley knowing, without anybody knowing. My grandchildren have gone to that school." He called the closure a "travesty" and asked council members and others present to be mindful of the impact on children and families.
Other speakers echoed those concerns and described Woodland Preschool as a cooperative learning environment rather than a daycare; one parent described the closure as a collective punch to the gut. The speakers urged more transparency and community notice when programs that serve children change operations or close.
Council members and staff listened and acknowledged the comments; no formal municipal action or directive appeared on the June 1 agenda and staff stated they did not have authority to reverse a private program decision during the meeting. The issue was raised to place the matter on the public record and to encourage conversations among school, preschool administration and community stakeholders.
What’s next: no city-initiated action was recorded at the meeting. Residents seeking recourse or more information were encouraged to contact the preschool directly and to notify school‑district or county officials as appropriate.
