Cleantech Alliance CEO outlines fusion energy27s promise and local supply-chain opportunities

Mel, chief executive officer of the Cleantech Alliance, told the Mukilteo City Council in a Jan. 26 work session that fusion energy is an emerging, long-term industry with substantial local activity and economic potential. "Fusion is very, very hot," Mel said, and explained in plain terms how fusion fuels such as deuterium and tritium work and why fusion27s scientific challenges make commercialization a multi-decade effort.
Mel said Northwest fusion companies have raised nearly $2 billion in venture and grant funding and that the region already houses prominent firms. He described a variety of technical approaches—magnetic confinement, inertial methods, Z-pinch and hybrid designs—and explained the rationale for a regional supply chain: many components for modular fusion machines overlap with advanced manufacturing already located near Everett.
"We're trying to do all these things simultaneously," Mel said, describing the Cleantech Alliance27s goal of aligning public engagement, policy and workforce preparation while companies continue to chase technical milestones such as achieving q>1 (getting more energy out than in).
Council members asked practical questions about where components would be made and how communities would judge safety. A committee member asked about "light-footprint" suppliers suitable for Mukilteo27s scale; Mel replied that many jobs will be in precision machining, electrical engineering and thermal systems and that some companies are pursuing very small modular designs that can be sited behind facilities or placed in shipping containers for rural uses.
On public acceptance and safety, Mel emphasized the technical differences between fusion and fission and said community education is a priority. "If you do use one of the approaches that does use tritium, it's a 12-and-a-half year half life," Mel said, comparing handling and regulation to familiar medical uses and emphasizing state regulatory familiarity in Washington.
Mel also described federal interest and utility engagement: he said the Department of Energy and other federal offices are connecting to regional firms, and he cited power purchase agreements and private-sector demand as drivers for deployment planning.
The presentation left council members with follow-up areas to explore: workforce training pathways, permitting and siting constraints for modular machines, and community outreach approaches to distinguish fusion from fission in public messaging. Mel provided the council with the Cleantech Alliance27s fusion supply-chain report and offered to return for further questions.
The council moved next to an emergency-management briefing; no formal action on fusion was taken at the meeting.
