Supervisors authorize solicitor to request county revisit 'Future Growth' designation for Schlegel parcels

The board voted unanimously on April 14 to authorize the solicitor to prepare and send a letter to county planners asking that three Schlegel-owned farmland parcels be reconsidered for preservation under the Agricultural Conservation Easement (ACE) program.
Beth Kohl, the township solicitor, explained that county staff told the Schlegels the parcels were currently designated as 'Future Growth' in the county comprehensive plan, which would make them ineligible for ACE. The parcels are zoned Rural under Longswamp’s zoning and match the township’s future land-use map, and the county comprehensive plan is under revision. Board members said they support preserving the land and asked Kohl to draft a letter asking the county to remove the Future Growth designation to facilitate conservation.
Supervisor Mike Sacks moved to authorize the solicitor to prepare and send the letter; Supervisor Mark Hilbert seconded and the motion passed with all in favor. The county will hold a regional meeting at the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles on May 14 where the county comprehensive plan revision will be discussed; township representatives were encouraged to attend.
Next steps: Solicitor Kohl will draft and send the letter to county planners; the board expects to follow the county comprehensive-plan process and attend the May 14 regional meeting for additional coordination.
