Dare County Schools board approves move of afterschool program to Right at School LLC

The Dare County Board of Education on June 8 approved an agreement to contract with Right at School LLC to operate the district's afterschool program formerly known as ASAP.
Assistant Superintendent Miss Sproul told the board the district has struggled to staff the in-house ASAP program and that many part-time employees were split across departments, which made maintaining ratios and consistent coverage difficult. She said Right at School offered a model that would hire program staff directly and provide full-time opportunities for some employees while preserving access for families.
"Our goal is to maintain pricing for families and maintain all current accessibility and create additional," Right at School vice president Stephanie Holloway said, summarizing the company's commitments. Holloway later described the organization's curriculum and daily schedule, and said the provider will manage marketing, payments and direct communication with families.
Miss Sproul told the board that current full-time ASAP site coordinators will be offered site program-manager positions with Right at School and that part-time employees who are not county full-time staff will have the option to apply and be guaranteed a job with the new operator. "So ASAP will no longer exist. It will become Right at School," a district official said during the meeting.
Board members asked about operational details, including inclement-weather and early-release days. Holloway said Right at School would coordinate directly with the district for communications and that regional managers based locally would be the point of contact for families.
The presentation stressed financial and access features: Right at School proposed to freeze or match current family fees so most families would see no increase; the company also proposed employee discounts (50% for district employees), multiple sibling discounts, a military discount and an "affordable access" subsidy for families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Holloway said the vendor projects an annual investment back to the district of roughly $25,000 based on expected enrollment.
Board members approved the agreement by voice vote. Staff and Right at School said next steps include outreach to families, staffing transitions, and an application process for families already on the ASAP wait list to enroll with Right at School for the coming school year.
