Planning board approves revised Jagger Lumber sign after size compromise

The Point Pleasant Beach Planning Board approved a revised exterior sign for Jagger Lumber on a motion at its June meeting.

Troy Frederick told the board he wanted to replace an old, unreadable yellow sign on the building front with attached PVC letters painted red to make the business visible to passing traffic. He said the existing sign lighting no longer worked and that drivers and pedestrians often do not realize the business is there.

Zoning staff and the board reviewed the applicant's two size options: a larger design with 46-inch letters that the board calculated at about 191 square feet and a smaller alternative of roughly 118 square feet. Board members and a zoning official (Ray) noted the borough's current allowance and discussed whether the proposal exceeded the permitted square footage. "You can do either," Frederick said of the two options, adding the applicant could choose the smaller size if the board preferred.

Tony Cretella, representing the sign installer, confirmed construction details and the proposed appearance. After questions about whether the existing sign face would be removed or only re-faced, a motion was made to approve a 36-inch letter option on a rectangular face for Jagger Lumber and maintain the overall box-light style. The motion passed and was recorded by roll call.

The board's decision directs the applicant to coordinate with the building department on final sizing and any necessary permits. The board did not attach special conditions beyond the approval of the reduced-letter-size, rectangular configuration.
