Shana Freeman-Lane sworn in to Tacoma School Board amid staff and student recognitions

Shana Freeman-Lane was sworn in as Tacoma School Board director for position No. 2 during the board’s meeting, taking the oath of office in a brief ceremony attended by family and board members.
The swearing-in was followed by a round of recognitions. Amanda Scott-Thomas of the Community Partnership Office presented the March Shining Star Community Partner Award to Gray Lumber, accepted by Blake Fransen, for long-standing donations and support to local schools. The board also honored Lincoln High School senior Olivia Edwards, recognizing her as a Gatorade Washington Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All‑American selectee; the board noted Edwards’ scoring milestones and that she will continue her basketball and academic career at the University of Tennessee.
District leaders used the meeting to spotlight classified employees across departments: Erica McClure, assistant director of nutrition services, thanked cafeteria teams that serve thousands of meals each day; Zach Middles, director of transportation, introduced bus drivers and dispatch staff who cover routes and special education transport; and Steve Graves recognized maintenance and custodial staff for long service and building stewardship.
The board moved quickly from ceremonial items into regular business after the recognitions, saying the new director was “welcome to the board” and confirming a full quorum for the evening.
The board scheduled its next regular meeting for April 2 and a retreat April 16.
