The Arlington Human Rights Commission met and heard a standing subcommittee report on county efforts to expand equity-focused training and improve outreach to immigrant communities.
A standing subcommittee member said county staffer Cynthia Lechase presented to the subcommittee about the county's work, including participation in a one-year cohort called "G forG" that aims to enhance equity in services and engagement for residents who speak languages other than English. "It was a great meeting. A lot of really good information," the standing subcommittee member said, describing internal-facing work intended to examine employees' experiences from hiring to separation through an equity lens and a mix of micro and structured trainings on topics including microaggressions.
The subcommittee member said the committee will draft recommendations for a report due at the end of the calendar year and discussed next steps for pulling those recommendations together. Members also noted the standing subcommittee's next convening is scheduled for August unless work continues virtually in the interim.
Procedurally, the commission approved the March meeting minutes by voice vote and later moved to adjourn after the open forum; no public commenters appeared at the meeting. The chair closed the meeting and said the commission will meet again next month.
