Council adopts ordinance allowing purchase of permissive pension service credit

The Miami Springs City Council on June 8 adopted on second reading an ordinance amending retirement‑plan language to permit members of the general employees retirement system and the police pension plan to purchase permissive service credit.
Staff explained the ordinance imposes no fiscal burden on the city because employees who elect to buy time must fund that purchase themselves. The city attorney was on Zoom during the reading; staff said the change aligns the city with practices used in other municipalities to help recruit and retain employees.
During public comment, Mary Owens (169 Coridan Drive) urged the council to remove the word "fire" from the plan name because Miami‑Dade County assumed fire services in 1974 or 1975; staff said they will raise the naming concern at the next pension‑board meeting to assess how to correct the ordinance language.
The council approved the ordinance on second reading by roll‑call vote (Vice Mayor Lamos, Councilmen Santine, Dion, Perez Crespbow and Mayor Feed all voted yes).
