The Ralston Public Schools administration presented preliminary budget figures and a tax‑levy outlook at the June 8 board meeting and warned trustees that uncertainty about future special‑education reimbursements could affect next year’s budget.
Business staff reported initial numbers showing a 4.64% increase in projected spending and a 2.33% increase in the local levy line, while noting some one‑time timing differences: a bond payment is due June 15 and the district recorded a positive month for the lunch program and a small depreciation‑fund deposit. Staff said those timing items will settle in the next one to two months.
The presentation highlighted that special‑education reimbursement remains a material unknown. "There are rumblings in insurance about what we're actually going to get reimbursement moving forward with the state for special education," a finance presenter told the board, and staff included a contingency from cash balances in the preliminary numbers. Trustees discussed maintaining a 5% board property‑tax authorization as an 'insurance policy' while awaiting final valuation and certified state‑aid numbers later this summer.
Board members were told the district will refine figures in August and September when final valuation and certified state‑aid information are available; staff recommended monitoring the special‑education ratio and contingency planning if reimbursements drop below historical levels.
