Smyth County School Board approves multiple retirements, resignations and new hires

The Smyth County School Board approved a slate of personnel actions on May 11 following a closed-session review, recording those approvals by roll call.
On a 6–0 recorded vote with Mr. Johnson abstaining due to his absence, the board approved four retirements (Sharon Collier, Cynthia Kestner, Amy Robertston and Beverly Wymer) and multiple resignations that include Laura Abernathy, Conor Berry-Reich, Michelle Billings, Marcus Dunham, IV, Michael Funk, D. Patrick Hancock, Nathan Jones, V. Jill Matchett, Paxton Matney, Melodie Moore, Meghan Parker, Harold Powers, Hanna Roland and Kari Spickard. The board also approved transfers for Megan Davis, Adrianna Kestner and Amber Taylor and hires including Lakin Adams (Oak Point Elementary instructional aide) and Erin Krug (Chilhowie Middle and High School teacher).
Extracurricular staffing changes approved included resignation of Hannah Roland from Oak Point Elementary yearbook and Hunter Thomas as Northwood High School head volleyball coach, with Lori Hamm and Jennifer Surber named to those yearbook and volleyball positions respectively. The board also approved several district substitute appointments (Vicki Cole; Edward Collins; James Dick; NiCole Holmes).
The same 6–0 recorded vote with Mr. Johnson abstaining approved two religious exemption cases (IDs 2026-01 and 2026-02). The board’s personnel approvals were moved and seconded in closed session and subsequently ratified in open session as required by state law.
