Upper Moreland EAC plans Bird Town outreach, native-plant giveaways; meadow policy vote postponed

The Upper Moreland Township Environmental Advisory Council at its June 3, 2026 meeting agreed to staff an informational table at a community 'Tweet and Greet' on June 14 and to give away native plants at a library screening in August, among other outreach and garden projects; members also recorded that voting on a proposed meadow policy has been postponed until a July BOC meeting.
The actions are part of the council’s effort to retain Bird Town status after joining the Bird City Network. The minutes note that World Migratory Bird Day must be celebrated; the fall date cited in the minutes is Oct. 10, 2026, with a spring observance in May 2027. Ideas discussed for observances included a presentation to the e-club, library posters and social media posts, a bird-watching event, a Lego bird-building activity and a scavenger hunt.
The council recorded approval of the May 6, 2026 minutes; the minutes do not show who moved or seconded that approval or a vote tally. Members also scheduled an informational table at the PERT 'Tweet and Greet' on Sunday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., saying they will distribute handouts on birds (including 'lights out' guidance and Feather Friendly) and will prepare a poster summarizing Bird Town activities.
Separately, the minutes record outreach and stewardship activities at the Upper Moreland Free Public Library site (UMFPL), including a planned native-plant giveaway at a screening of The Extraordinary Caterpillar on Aug. 1, 2026 at 11:15 a.m., and a report that volunteers weeded the UMFPL pollinator garden on June 1. The EAC is planning to expand the garden outside the fence on Park Avenue and intends to mulch when the expansion plan begins.
The minutes also list a volunteer weeding session for the bird-friendly area at Pilegge Park on June 4 at 10:00 a.m. and a set of items the council wants to keep on its radar, including Fair Oaks plantings, tree plantings at the dog park, adding water bottle filling stations at parks, concerns about girdling of park trees and use of Roundup on township properties, and making the EAC more visible on the township website.
The minutes state that voting on the new meadow policy was postponed until the July 'BOC meeting' but do not expand the abbreviation or provide further scheduling detail. The meeting was recorded as adjourning at 7:50 p.m.
