Averill Park honors dozens of longtime employees at retiree celebration

The Averill Park Central School District opened its June 8 meeting with a retiree celebration recognizing dozens of longtime employees for their service to students and the community.
Board members and school leaders read names and brief remembrances for staff who retired this year. Honorees included classroom aides and teachers, counselors, custodial and maintenance staff, and transportation employees. Lucy Arnold was noted for her work as a teacher’s aide at Miller Hill Elementary School since 1998 and said she is proud to have seen former students progress to graduation. Lisa Andis, who will collect a 30-year pin, said, “The thing that I’m most proud of is working with children who I see excelling and learning so much year to year. The smile on a child’s face when they finally understand something is priceless,” and plans to spend more time with family and volunteer with preschool-age children.
Other retirees included a speech-language pathologist who described the joy of the first day of school and watching students’ faces light up when they grasp a new concept; a maintenance director lauded for keeping district buildings operational; bus drivers and attendants who were thanked for daily service transporting students; and staff credited with starting district programs such as a backpack food program to support students in need. Several honorees shared plans to travel, volunteer, work on personal projects or spend time with family.
Board members presented a formal resolution expressing the board’s appreciation for the retirees; the resolution was read into the record and approved as part of the meeting minutes. A light reception followed the ceremony.
The retiree recognition emphasized personal reflections and gratitude rather than policy or budgetary decisions; board members used the occasion to thank colleagues and the community for supporting district staff.
