Council advances ordinance to move animal-control enforcement to sheriff’s office

The Calhoun County Council held the first reading July 14 of Ordinance 16-2025, which would amend Chapter 30 of the Calhoun County Code to make the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office responsible for enforcement of animal-control ordinances.
Staff explained the change is primarily administrative: the administration of animal control would transfer from county administration to the sheriff's office while other ordinance provisions would remain the same. Council members asked whether personnel changes would be needed; staff responded that positions would be moved across departments ("cross-level positions"). Members thanked Sheriff Summers for accepting the responsibility and noted the sheriff's office will provide after-hours and town-limits coverage under the existing government agreement.
A motion to approve the ordinance on first reading was moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote. The ordinance will return for further readings as required under county procedure.
