Wesley Chapel council rejects motion to ask congressman for letter on FEMA dam grant

A motion to contact Congressman Harris and request a letter of recommendation supporting the village's FEMA grant application failed at the Wesley Chapel Council meeting on Oct. 13, after a lengthy debate about priorities and whether federal staff could or would influence the grant review.

Joel Down and resident Bill urged council to press for outside help and for an update from FEMA. Planning and engineering staff had previously contacted state dam-safety staff: "All items had been submitted and all projects were still being reviewed by FEMA," engineer Amy Black reported, and she said the state staff "didn't have any control over the schedule" and doubted that contacting the state would change the federal timeline.

Council members split over whether to involve a congressional office during an uncertain federal funding environment and a partial government shutdown. Mayor Amanda opposed the motion, saying the village should prioritize regional needs and pointing to the village's own savings strategy for the dam. "I think... we are a very wealthy county," the mayor said during debate as she argued for prioritizing resources; other council members said they support continued effort to track FEMA's review and suggested staff follow up for status updates when federal operations resume.

After discussion the motion to contact Congressman Harris failed on the floor; council later agreed staff could continue to ask state dam-safety staff for updates and to revisit outreach once federal operations are functioning.
