High‑school renovation nears finish; middle‑school chiller failure prompts expedited engineering

Mrs. Hence told the board several change orders for the high‑school renovation were needed to address items missed on drawings — electrical work (including a wrestling light) and added conduit for refrigerant panels, plumbing work for eyewash mixing valves, and sprinkler redesigns tied to a wall adjustment. She said contingencies will cover many of the charges and that change orders will be presented for approval at the June 15 meeting.
Administrators reported the stadium is nearly complete and was ready in time to host commencement; remaining items include landscaping and stormwater adjustments, with final completion expected in late July or early August. A board member said the district is pleased work allowed graduation to proceed as planned.
Separately, staff described an urgent problem at the middle school: the HVAC chiller became unreliable (temporarily forcing virtual instruction when the issue first surfaced). Although technicians restored operation, administrators said lead times for a replacement chiller are about 30 weeks. Mrs. Hence asked the board to authorize immediate engineering work so that design, procurement and installation can proceed ahead of a targeted operational date next spring; a purchase and installation authorization would follow once designs are complete.
Next steps: the board will consider the listed change orders and an authorization to proceed with engineering for the chiller at the June 15 meeting. No final construction approvals were made at the June 8 work session.
