District facilities staff presented the annual sustainability update to the board, reporting measurable energy savings and expanded waste‑diversion efforts.
Facilities staff said the district reduced electricity consumption by about 11.6% and natural‑gas use by about 12% compared with the prior year, noting that these figures measure usage rather than cost. The presentation highlighted targeted efficiency work at the district’s largest energy consumers (notably the four high‑school campuses and McDougall campus), ongoing building‑automation improvements, and planned roof and HVAC replacements at older, inefficient sites such as Carrboro High School.
The district reported that LED lighting conversions are complete across the portfolio and that a grant of just under $300,000 funded rooftop solar at Northside Elementary. Staff estimated the solar installation will yield roughly $650,000 in utility savings over 25 years under current incentive assumptions and said the grant support produced an unusually short payback in this case.
Facilities staff also described expanded composting: Orange County subsidized composting and the district now composts vegetative kitchen waste in a majority of kitchens, reducing trash pickups and lowering annual trash‑collection costs (facilities estimated a trash contract savings on the order of $42,000). Staff noted an undetected underground water leak earlier in the year caused a one‑time uptick in water use while meter audits and building automation improvements are expected to reduce waste going forward.
Board members asked about the geographic distribution of savings, solar monitoring and opportunities to link sustainability projects to career and technical education for students. Staff said they will bring further detail in a future presentation about partnerships with the towns, Orange County and UNC, and will provide publicly digestible materials to explain the initiatives and savings.
The presentation concluded with a list of next steps: expand campus audits, pursue targeted capital replacements where payback or grant funding is available, continue meter reconciliation and analytics with an energy consultant, and explore electric vehicle and solar bus grants if costs and funding align.
