Emily Brewer told the council the public hearing concerns The Family Place (970 Old Hendersonville Highway) and a requested rezoning to replace the site's conditional zoning with the base Residential Mixed Use district so the location remains a legal conforming use under the unified development ordinance. Brewer said the Planning Board unanimously recommended approval on Jan. 27 and a draft enacting ordinance was included in the council packet; no action was requested at the public hearing stage.
Tony Gilman, a Family Place board member and former chair, spoke in support, describing the nonprofit’s roughly 30 years of service providing parent support, open play and at‑risk programs and saying the rezoning request primarily enables a modest sign replacement and continued operations. “The Family Place has been a nonprofit strengthening families in this city and county for about 30 years,” Gilman said, and offered to answer questions about the application.
Council members asked only technical questions (map legibility) and thanked the applicant; there were no objections and the hearing was closed. Staff will proceed with the typical ordinance enactment process and any required notices for subsequent council action.
