Facilities update: lead-in-water report, Flannry Field change orders total about $27,370; porta-potties planned

Facilities director Mr. Capelli told the board the district completed its required testing of sinks and fountains as part of school code section 242 and addressed identified deficiencies. "From the drinking water and a cooking perspective, we feel the Wyomissing Area School District's good from a drinking water perspective," he said, noting additional filters on bottle-filling stations and that the annual discussion is required by code.
Mr. Capelli also described construction issues at Flannry Field discovered during a May inspection by McCarthy Engineering. The inspector required cleanouts for the infiltration trench that were not in the original bid documents, and crews encountered unforeseen grading conditions in right field that required additional retaining wall. Mr. Capelli said the change orders total roughly $27,370 — about $8,354 for the added cleanouts and $19,335 for retaining-wall work — and that the change order will be on the June 22 board agenda for approval.
Board members questioned why the requirement was not caught earlier and whether McCarthy's review should have identified the need before construction; Mr. Capelli said the requirement existed but had not been included in the initial construction documents and that the issue was identified during construction inspections. He said overall the project remains under 5% change orders for total project cost and that the district will still present the change order for formal approval.
Separately, in response to parents' concerns about restroom access during games, Mr. Capelli said the district plans to place two porta-potties at the facility for next year and that the ADA walkway and maintenance access are being addressed so visitors will have reasonable access without crossing the field during play.
The board did not adopt the change order at this meeting; Mr. Capelli said it will appear on the June 22 agenda and he is available for questions beforehand.
