Erie Youth for Change presents events and intergenerational goals to council

Erie Youth for Change, the town’s informal teen council, presented to the Town Council on May 26, summarizing a second year of programming and new leadership.
Savannah Shifrin, parks and recreation staff liaison, introduced the student leaders. Students described accomplishments including Tech Fest (pairing seniors with teens for tech help), a summer reading buddies program run with the Erie Community Library, volunteer support at community events such as the Strider Derby and Dia de los Muertos, and a gingerbread assembly at a winter camp. They said the group currently counts about 13 members from four local high schools and aims to expand intergenerational events next year.
Student leaders Sam Meddy and Naya Boyd said the group is organizing Pickleball Under the Lights at the Eurex Center and a family movie night for 2026–27. Council members praised the students’ work and encouraged continued connection between youth and town policy discussions, noting youth perspectives can inform safety and programming decisions such as e‑bike outreach.
Council and staff thanked EYC for volunteer work and pledged continued support for youth engagement opportunities.
