Board reviews first readings to align district policies with new Indiana laws, including student phone limits and parental controls

On technology and student devices, staff said the acceptable‑use policy will be updated to permit parents or guardians to strengthen content filters and time limits on school‑issued devices used off campus; district staff said systems will be ready by Jan. 1 to allow increased filter strength and other parental controls. The wireless communication device policy (commonly described as the cell‑phone policy) was updated to reflect state law that prohibits student use of wireless devices during the school day; staff said devices must be powered off and inaccessible from the time a student enters school until dismissal, with limited exceptions for accessibility or medical needs.
Other updates presented at first reading included wellness policy language aligned to state health guidance and USDA smart snack rules; C525 (medical needs) revisions for AED/epi provisions and an emergency medical team; purchasing procedure changes to reflect statute prohibitions on certain contract provisions; and a public records policy update to clarify cost/reviewer provisions for burdensome requests. The items were presented as first readings and will return for subsequent action.
