Committee hears PGI seawall, dredging and Buckley Pass spoil-site updates

City Public Works staff updated the Punta Gorda Isles Canal Advisory Committee on June 9 about seawall replacement progress, recent dredging, and a proposed spoil-site restoration near Buckley Pass.
Mark Storm, Public Works (Canal Maintenance), told the committee that Hurricane Ian-related seawall replacements are approximately "96%" complete across PGI and that Darren Court work is in the backfill stage and nearly ready for the final saw-cut. He said three crane/barges are active in PGI out of five possible and described the work sequencing by zone.
On inlet work, staff reported completion of a dredge at Mako Canal (near Great Isaac Court and Banyan Point) that removed roughly 1,200 cubic yards of material; the dredged product was redistributed within the canal system. Storm said the team aims to reach a six-foot depth in problem areas later this summer and noted edge shoaling remains near pilings.
Staff also presented a proposed spoil-site plan near Buckley Pass to receive dredged material and to facilitate removal/disposal of old seawall components. Kristen Simeone said DEP State Parks had preliminarily agreed to a restoration site adjacent to Buckley Pass and an engineering consultant met with DEP on June 4; staff awaited that consultant’s report. Bridal Clements (Public Works) clarified that initial work is focused on exotic Brazilian-pepper removal rather than active dredging at the spoil site, and said natural mangrove recruitment might follow removal work rather than immediate replanting.
Committee members raised jurisdictional questions about Alligator Creek MSBU boundaries; staff said the mapped limits appear to be inside Punta Gorda City but agreed to confirm MSBU limits with Charlotte County maps and report back. Members asked for maps and more detailed plans; staff said a colored map and further detail will be provided.
Staff also said they will post PGI/BSI maintenance lists to the city website and will continue monthly contractor progress updates. The committee closed the operational updates before moving into the budget workshop portion of the meeting.
