Finance committee approves $19,000 transfer to pay for breached sewer line

The Halifax Finance Committee voted June 1 to transfer $19,000 from the town's reserve fund to the Town Building outside maintenance account to pay for an emergency sewer‑line repair at the water department.
Chair Jim Walters read the request under the authority of Massachusetts General Laws chapter 40, section 6, noting the reserve fund's current balance of $9,476. "The amount is requested to be used to pay for the sewer line failure repair at the water department," Walters said when presenting the request.
A motion to approve the transfer was moved and the committee conducted a roll‑call vote. Members voting yes included Cheryl Burke, Mike Bennett, Frank Johnston, Mike Rignetta and Rod Hemingway; the motion carried and the committee chair also recorded his vote in favor. Members instructed staff to submit signed forms for the transfer so the funds could be processed.
Committee members said the repair forced the town building office to close and required administrative staff to work from home until the sewer line was fixed. Lindsay (town finance staff) said she was tracking other pending transfers, including electricity and oil, that may come before the committee at future meetings.
The committee did not identify the mover or seconder on the record during the roll call beyond the affirmative votes; committee staff will prepare the paperwork and scan it for remote members to sign.
