The Downtown Joplin Alliance updated the council on March 17, reporting residential growth, grant awards and development activity in the downtown district.
Laurie Hahn said downtown housing is "still really strong" with about 350 occupied units and roughly 200 units in various stages of development. She highlighted eight new condo units in the Croft (Hertz) Building coming this summer and said owner-occupied downtown housing remains a gap the alliance is trying to fill.
Hahn said the alliance secured $124,000 in grant funds, including $50,000 for an endangered properties program and $43,000 for a walk-in cooler for the Newton Community Kitchen. She noted recent property transactions — the Carnegie Library sold to a buyer planning an event/meeting redevelopment and the Pearl Brothers Building closed — and said a Phase I environmental assessment for the Carnegie is scheduled. Market improvements funded by ARPA will add accessible restrooms by late April/early May and other facility upgrades.
Council thanked the alliance for its work; Hahn invited council and the public to upcoming events such as 3rd Thursday and downtown-now educational sessions.
