City asked to accept $13,551 state wellness grant to outfit officer resiliency room

Police Chief Jonathan told the council the department's wellness committee applied for and received a grant from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission to outfit a resiliency and wellness room for officers.

"The grant total is $13,551," Jonathan said, and described requested items including zero‑gravity chairs, yoga mats, a sound system, specialized lighting and diffusers. He said the department already has a room available and that the award covers nearly everything requested.

Jonathan said the grant would require an end‑of‑year budget amendment if accepted and that staff will track room and equipment usage and send quarterly anonymized wellness surveys to establish baseline and follow‑up wellness metrics. He described the program as part of broader officer retention efforts and noted the room would be lockable and used as part of incident aftercare or periodic wellness use.

Councilmembers asked about reporting responsibilities and whether the city needed to provide additional data or monitoring support. Jonathan said the department will use an existing wellness‑tracking program and expects to survey officers quarterly to gather anonymized usage and wellness indicators for reporting back to the council.
