At the May 5 meeting the city’s Public Information Office announced a pair of outreach efforts aimed at boosting recycling participation and addressing tire disposal.
Staff invited residents to a public-education and outreach open house on recycling (library, May 6, 4–6 p.m.) and said an online survey is available for those who cannot attend. The outreach is intended to gather resident feedback on recycling experience, preferences and barriers so staff can shape education and participation programs.
Staff also announced a free tire-collection event on Saturday, June 7, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., at the old Lone Elm plant (2214 North Lone Elm Road). The event is open to Joplin residents and residents of Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Barton and Vernon counties. Staff said the limit is 10 tires per vehicle; semi, tractor, racing and ATV tires will not be accepted. When council asked whether the limit is one trip per address, staff confirmed one trip per residential address and that businesses are not eligible.
Staff said notices and details will be posted on the city’s website and social pages and encouraged residents to use the online survey if they cannot attend the open house.
