At its June 6 meeting the Speedway Town Council recognized a retirement, awarded a bravery medal and confirmed several promotions within the fire department.
Council members thanked Battalion Chief Jeff Cheshire for 24 years of service as the department acknowledged his new role as a training chief with another department and recognized his service at a reception. The council also presented Dale Hanley with a Medal of Bravery for his actions during an Oct. 3 fire that involved interior vent/search work and rescuing people at risk, describing the call as one that involved flames coming from windows and split-second decisions by crews. "We don't recognize guys like this enough," a speaker said while introducing the medal presentation.
The council used the promotional lists to confirm internal promotions: Captain Mark Lakes was promoted to battalion chief and Lieutenant Chris Jenkins was selected in the captain's promotional process. Family members joined the ceremony to pin badges and helmet shields.
Councilors praised the fire department's work and expressed appreciation for public-safety personnel across departments. Fire Chief Fishburn also announced his planned retirement effective Aug. 3 during department reports.
