Speedway council approves two summer special events: St. Christopher festival and Dawson’s 20th anniversary

The Speedway Town Council on June 6 approved two special-event requests that will close short street segments and include on-site public-safety plans.
Doug Poner, representing the St. Christopher Summer Festival Committee, asked the council for temporary street lane closures and no-parking zones during the week of June 15 and for the north side of 15th Street to be made one-way between Lynhurst and Builtmore. He said the festival will close specified segments of Builtmore and install temporary no-parking zones along the two-block area. Poner told council the festival will provide eight off-duty officers on-site from 5–11 p.m. on both nights (June 19–20), print large DOT-style directional graphics, bring back rides 'like we used to have' and run free shuttle service from Speedway High School to reduce local parking demand. The council approved the special event request by voice vote.
Delaney Hill, manager of Dawson's on Main, requested a temporary closure of 15th Street up to the alley for a June 27 community celebration marking Dawson's 20th anniversary and asked the council to waive permit and roadway fees and police support charges. Hill said neighboring businesses and residents had been contacted and support the plan; the council moved and approved the permit and fee waivers.
Both approvals carried on routine voice votes. Staff said they will coordinate sign plans and a walk-through with the street department to address logistics such as ladder and access points before the events.
