Exira officials press county on regional water shortage, outline local projects

A City of Exira delegation met with the Audubon County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 25 to brief the county on multiple community projects and an ongoing regional water shortage.
Meg Andersen, Mike Huegerich, Tim Wahlert and Mike Lauritsen said Exira has projects under way including a Homes of Iowa house, a city council-approved program to incentivize homebuyers, and community visioning work. The delegation said the most urgent problem is a prolonged water shortage that also affects the nearby City of Brayton.
Officials noted an existing pipeline tie-in to the Council Bluffs system but said the connection is not yet completed. Exira representatives said the city could hire a professional engineer to evaluate water options but estimated the cost at roughly $30,000 and warned that an engineering study may not provide a guaranteed solution.
City representatives also listed upcoming local events, including an Exira Community Club kickoff on March 8 and National Night Out on Aug. 5, and said a library report meeting date will be scheduled soon. No formal county action was taken during the meeting; the city requested county awareness and support as projects progress.
