Board opens 30-day public comment on modest code-of-conduct revisions

The West Seneca Central School District on June 9 publicly presented proposed revisions to the district code of conduct and opened a required 30-day public comment period before the board will consider adoption.

Sharon Loughgren, director of people/personnel services, told trustees the committee reviewing the code included representation from across district buildings and that this year’s package contains limited but specific clarifications. Notable changes presented:

• Backpack language tightened to emphasize that high-school-sized "personal" bags should fit under a student’s desk or be stored in lockers and that district personnel (building principals or designees) may make exceptions for documented needs;

• Rewording around "play fighting" to categorize it under conduct that is physically disruptive or potentially hazardous, to reduce ambiguity and to focus on safety;

• A new line (noted as page 15, item 25 in the presentation) addressing willful behavior that allows or could allow unauthorized access to school buildings; and

• A minor wording correction under academic dishonesty to reference "one’s own work."

Loughgren said the district will accept public feedback during the 30-day comment window and will return any significant suggestions to the committee for consideration before bringing a final draft to the board. "We really want to stress that for students to please make sure that your backpack fits under your desk or your chair," she said, explaining the safety rationale.

The board did not adopt the revisions at the meeting; the public comment period is the next step in the formal policy revision process.
