West Seneca to partner with YMCA for before- and after-school childcare

The West Seneca Central School District announced June 9 that it will transition its before- and after-school childcare program from a district-run Community Education model to a partnership with the YMCA.
Superintendent Dr. Krueger said the change is intended to ensure full compliance with state regulations governing student-to-staff ratios and childcare operations. “We are a school district. We are not a childcare provider, but we have chosen to provide childcare services with a partner that will provide that service on our campuses for our families,” she said, adding that the district will try to preserve many program features families value, including on-site hours approximately 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Dr. Krueger noted tradeoffs: families will need to choose fixed regular schedules (for example, part-time options of one to five days per week are possible) rather than ad-hoc drop-in arrangements, though the YMCA is expected to provide programming during school breaks and summer and to offer tuition reductions for qualifying families. The district said information was distributed to elementary families and that a virtual parent information session hosted by the YMCA is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16; the superintendent said she would ask the YMCA to record the session for later viewing.
The board did not take a formal vote on this announcement; it was presented as an operational transition and the district will publish a frequently asked questions document and follow-up details on the district website.
