Council approves lease to bring Head Start childcare to former Alice S. Williams library

Staff said renovations were funded through an African American Cultural and Heritage grant and CRA funds and described the site as supporting workforce development, Department of Health partner activities, and Head Start services. The presenter said the facility includes approximately 275 square feet of dedicated community space for continuing education, maternal-health training, and other wraparound supports in addition to core childcare.
Council members praised the outcome as addressing a longstanding local need for childcare. Councilman Wiggins moved the award and Councilman Moore seconded; the motion passed 7–0.
What this means: CAPC Head Start will negotiate lease terms with the mayor’s office; any future appropriation or programming details will return to council for approval. The public hearing portion concluded with no substantial public opposition.
