Freeman Health System names Matt Frey president and CEO; outlines quality and access goals

Matt Frey, who said he started as president and CEO of Freeman Health System on April 1, told the Joplin City Council on June 7 that he sees opportunities to improve quality, access and patient experience across the system. "My name is Matt Frey. I'm the president and CEO of Freeman Health System," he said during an introduction by Mayor Cortez.
Frey described a long career in health-care operations, including leadership roles at large systems, and said his priorities include raising clinical quality and expanding access. He noted Freeman West currently has a 1-star CMS rating and said the system is "on the cusp of becoming a 2-star" facility; he added, "I've challenged the team to get us to 4 stars in 4 years." City council members asked about local partnerships and workforce pipelines; Frey said Freeman has joined the Joplin Regional Alliance for Health and supports Missouri Southern's allied-health expansion to build nursing and allied-care pipelines.
Council members responded positively and offered to help coordinate city partnerships. Councilmember Koppel asked whether Frey supported regional health-system coordination; Frey said Freeman is committed "financially" and through staff time to those efforts. The mayor and other councilmembers welcomed Frey to the community and thanked him for visiting the council chamber.
The council did not take any formal action related to Freeman during the appearance. The presentation concluded after a short question-and-answer period, and the meeting moved on to other agenda items.
