MassDEP updates brownfields, Superfund and restoration grant activity; 21 sites in active brownfields work

Department officials provided a cross-program update on brownfields, federal-site oversight and natural-resource restoration grants.
Diane Baxter, director of the Division of Federal Grant Programs, said the brownfields assistance program provides assessment and cleanup funding and is currently working on 21 eligible sites. She described a series of in-person brownfields roundtables scheduled across the state and encouraged practitioners to submit potential sites for assistance. "If you have any sites that you think would be eligible for assistance, there's a link here for the assistance request form," Baxter said.
On Superfund oversight, staff reported the division manages 31 traditional Superfund sites and is tracking a proposed listing of a former fireworks site; long-running remedial actions in places such as New Bedford Harbor and other sites are moving toward restoration and monitoring phases.
Michelle Kratic (Natural Resource Damages program) highlighted NRD-funded restoration projects wrapping up this fiscal year — design and fish-passage work at Centennial Dam, stormwater and green-infrastructure work in Walpole, and the Horn Pond fish ladder in Woburn (about $1 million in NRD funds combined with other contributions) — and noted forthcoming NRD grant solicitations for Mystic River restoration and Romney Marsh work.
Staff encouraged stakeholders to use posted web links for program details and funding opportunity materials.
