Lamar County School Board: recognitions, summer hires and personnel moves approved
Summary
The board recognized national cheer championships, approved extended-year and summer school staffing, accepted several retirements and reviewed resignations and zone transfer requests during executive session; two student transfer requests were denied after review.
At its May 11 meeting the Lamar County School District board recognized Purvis High School and Sumrall Middle School cheer squads for national championships and approved recommendations for extended-school-year employees, summer-school faculty and summer workers for 2026.
During executive session the board reviewed student residency and zone-transfer petitions and denied two transfer requests after administrative review and examination of residency and custody documentation. The board also received personnel reports: one principal submitted retirement effective June 30, and several teachers and staff submitted resignations and requests to be released from 2026–27 contracts. For a number of those resignations the Board accepted administrative recommendations to treat the departures as contract abandonments and to notify the State Department of Education concerning the unfulfilled contracts as required by state policy.
Several personnel items and retirements were handled in the consent agenda. A board member recused herself for one personnel action as noted on the record. The superintendent reported the district audit for fiscal 2025 had been filed, noting three minor findings that administration is addressing. The superintendent also reported no building damage to district schools from the May 6 tornado event but said the community response has been substantial and that Purvis High is coordinating donations for families affected by storm damage.
Board members thanked staff for graduation planning and for district academic performance noted in recognitions. The board set the next regular meetings for June 8 and July 20, 2026.
