Deputy superintendent: district saved about $157,000 in first year of energy-efficiency plan; recommends new Spainhower gym floor

Deputy Superintendent Reinke told the Board of Education the district’s first year of an energy-efficiency program produced measurable savings, and he recommended replacing the Spainhower gym floor.

Reinke (Deputy Superintendent) said the program yielded roughly $157,000 in building-level savings in the first year and that Navitas will give a fuller report in September. “For one year, we’ve saved about $157,000 through our energy-efficiency work,” he said, and listed building-specific figures for the high school, Beaker Middle School, Spainhower, Butterfield and other facilities.

Reinke also asked the board to approve replacing the Spainhower gym floor with a 7-millimeter Kiefer vinyl activity floor that carries a 20-year warranty and allows tables and events in addition to athletics. “It’s a Kiefer floor… it’s very durable,” he said. Reinke reported the district received a single vendor quote of $107,360 and recommended running procurement through TIPS, the district’s purchasing cooperative, to ensure compliance with state purchasing rules.

Reinke described other summer facilities work — a secure vestibule at the high school with concrete footings poured, HVAC and electrical work underway, the Transportation and Distribution building turned over for occupancy, relocation of coolers and a new freezer for food-service storage, interior painting at Beaker, and planned door replacements at the high school to address worn locks and improve security.

The board did not debate the Spainhower floor during the report; Reinke said the floor recommendation will proceed to the next meeting for formal consideration. Navitas’ September presentation will show the energy-efficiency measures and methodology behind the reported savings.
