School board liaison reports $5.65 million preliminary deficit; proposed tax increase would reduce it

Councilman Ben Schad, serving as the borough’s School Board liaison, told Borough Council on April 21 that the Mechanicsburg School District projects $117.7 million in expenditures and $112 million in revenues, resulting in a preliminary $5.65 million budget deficit.
Schad said the district is considering proposed tax increases that would reduce the gap to approximately $3.32 million. He also said residential school taxes would rise from 1% to 1.5% under the proposals discussed by the school board. Schad noted that construction expenses have increased since last year and that elementary classrooms may increase by up to five students.
The report was delivered as a liaison update; Borough Council took no formal action on school budget matters during the session. The school board will make budget decisions through its normal deliberative process and any tax-rate changes would be set by the school board.
