Local parents ask Chambers County for space for children with disabilities

Rebecca "Becky" White told the Commissioners Court on June 9 that the Special Moms of Mont Belvieu — a group of parents of children with disabilities — is seeking county assistance to find a place for after‑school and summer programs.
"My name is Becky ... we have about 185 parents in our group. There's about a thousand disabled children or a thousand kids that receive special services through Barbers Hill," she told the court. She said families travel to neighboring cities for programming and asked the county to help locate space in Chambers County.
Becky said families bring children to Deer Park, La Porte and Houston because local programming is lacking and asked the court to consider facilities or possibilities the county might have. Court staff directed Becky to follow up on signage and with county staff about potential sites.
The request was made during the public comment portion of the meeting; the court did not act on a specific funding or program request during the session.
