Farmington Central CUSD 265 board honors student-athletes after strong seasons

The Farmington Central CUSD 265 Board of Education recognized junior high and high school athletes for successful seasons during its meeting on June 30.

Acting as presiding officer, the chair introduced junior high wrestling coach Zazin and highlighted Drake Melton’s individual accomplishments: “He ended up getting 2nd place at state this year,” the chair said, noting a reported season record of 21-1. The board applauded Melton’s finish and the program’s progress.

Coach Gilstrap gave a detailed recap of the junior high track season, saying, “We had over a 100 kids sign up for track, and we had 84 still on the track team when we made it to sectionals this year.” He reported that all four teams (7th- and 8th-grade boys and girls) were conference champions, that several athletes qualified for state in multiple events, and that the school recorded new marks including Addison Martin’s 8th-grade girls 800 and Kane Rogers’s 7th-grade boys 100.

High school coach Brad Wickham, who introduced himself to the board, summarized the high school season and state qualifiers. “We had two ladies qualify for state this year,” Wickham said of Rael Heron and Renaya Taylor, and he noted the boys’ team won a sectional championship for the first time in 26 years. Wickham also highlighted relay qualifiers and individual state qualifiers such as Noah Fleming, Jackson Ray, and Ethan Martin.

Why it matters: Board recognition highlights participation growth and competitive success across grade levels, signaling strong feeder programs and community volunteer support noted by coaches. Several student-athletes will advance to state-level competition, and the programs reported individual school records.

The meeting then moved to regular business and action items following the recognitions.
