Sumter County sets July 28 public hearing on proposed fire assessment after Accenture study

SUMTERVILLE, Fla. — The Sumter County Board of County Commissioners voted May 26 to preliminarily accept an Accenture study dated 05/26 recommending methodology for a countywide fire assessment and to set a public hearing for 6 p.m. on July 28 at the Gloria Roe Hayward Sumter County Service Center.
The action authorizes staff to finalize the collection of supporting documents, proposed rates and the draft rate resolution needed for public notice and the TRIM roll. County attorney explained that the board’s vote tonight sets the public‑hearing process; a final assessment would be adopted only after the July hearing and any required notices.
Consultant Sandy Neubarth (Accenture) described how accessory structures and buildings will be treated: charges are applied using the property appraiser’s building files and are based on gross square footage ("everything under roof"), not only conditioned space; features classified as miscellaneous by the property appraiser would not be charged.
Commissioners said they will review the assessment in a budget workshop and analyze how the proposed rates interact with the municipal service taxing unit. The board approved the motion to set the public hearing and preliminary study acceptance by voice vote.
Staff and the consultant will prepare the final package of documents for the July 28 public hearing, at which rates and the final assessment resolution may be adopted.
