Resident Deb Sber, who said she has driven the senior van for nearly 15 years, told the board she opposed converting to a wheelchair van because she and another driver believed they were physically unable to operate wheelchair lifts in all weather and assist passengers into facilities. She asked the board for demographic information and whether the county mandates such vehicles.
Board members acknowledged the comment and said the town must be ready to serve residents who require wheelchair-accessible transport. Council Member Jessica Armburst and others said the lift design is well thought out and that the town had worked with county staff during review. The recreation director, Chris Van, told the board he supports a wheelchair option and said Erie County is piloting the program with a small number of municipalities.
The board approved the motion to authorize the supervisor to sign the lease and services agreement; members said policies and staff training will be developed alongside the service. The motion carried by voice vote.
