The Wilson School District Board of School Directors voted unanimously on June 8 to adopt the district’s 2026–27 general fund budget totaling $161,100,000 and to set the real-estate tax at 33.06 mills.
Mr. McCrae, the board’s finance committee chair, told colleagues the district expects to close the year with a projected deficit of roughly $3.8 million, an improvement from the $8.9 million that had been budgeted. He also flagged roughly $90,000 in districtwide negative food-service balances as an area of continuing concern.
The budget vote included a correction discussed during the meeting: the capital plan figure was clarified to be $2.5 million (the agenda initially listed an incorrect figure). Board members said the budget follows months of committee work and planning to spread costs within a multi-year capital forecast.
In addition to the general fund numbers, Mr. McCrae noted a proposed millage increase of 3.96% that the administration said still places the district in the lower third of county districts by tax rate. The motion to approve finance items 10.3–10.7, including the budget and tax levy, passed on a roll-call vote of eight yes, zero no.
The board also approved routine finance items and payment of bills at the same meeting. No member argued against adoption; members thanked the finance committee and administrative staff for the months-long budget work.
What happens next: the adopted budget and levy set the district’s spending and tax rate for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The board noted ongoing monitoring of food-service balances and other close-out items as the fiscal year ends June 30.
