Chesterton police commission approves promotions, new hire and parade permit

The Chesterton Police Commission unanimously approved several personnel actions and one event permit during its June 8 meeting.
The chief reported that probationary Officers Mans and Oberholzer are progressing well in training and that he expects no extensions to their probation. He also reported the emergency hiring of Mallory Leathers (hired after IMPRS approval) and said she began work the Friday before the meeting.
“Because of the delay, we started her the very next day, last Friday,” the chief said, and noted a ceremonial swearing‑in is planned at the June Town Council meeting.
The commission approved removing three officers from their six‑month promotion probation: Lieutenant Freeburg, Sergeant Miersma and Corporal Vani. A commissioner seconded the chief’s recommendation and the motion passed with all members present voting “aye.”
The commission also approved the annual parade permit for 320 Recovery, noting the event runs mostly in the county with a small portion in town; organizers hire off‑duty officers and volunteers. A commissioner moved to approve the permit and the motion carried.
Separately, the commission approved a request to accelerate Leathers’ pay to master patrol status under the town’s lateral hire policy and to grandfather three years of prior service for vacation accrual. Commissioners praised department staffing improvements and asked the chief to email the PowerPoint presentation from his report to members.
There were no public comments at the meeting and the commission adjourned after routine business.
