Yucaipa officials used the June 8 meeting to formally thank Fire Captain Travis Pay for 18 years of service and to adopt a proclamation declaring June 14, 2026 as Flag Day.
City staff and the fire chief described Captain Pay's long service, highlighting his leadership roles at Station 3 and Station 552, his role in youth outreach and the Law & Public Safety Academy, and his work organizing the community's Toys for Yucaipa program. Captain Pay addressed the council and thanked colleagues; school-district representatives and council members praised his mentorship of students and the role he has played in the city's training programs.
Deputy Mayor Baieber read the Flag Day proclamation and representatives from the Knights of Columbus (Dr. Don Abil) accepted it and spoke briefly about the organization's civic work.
Separately, staff provided a status update on Freedom Fest (July 4) and Patriot Plaza fundraising goals. Event staff reported about $71,988 raised toward a $200,000 Freedom Fest goal and about $958 received toward a roughly $262,000 Patriot Plaza fundraising target for flagpoles and a commemorative program; the city and Chamber of Commerce continue outreach for sponsorships and donations.
Action: Mayor and council recognized Captain Travis Pay on the public record and adopted the Flag Day proclamation; staff will continue fundraising and report back on sponsorship progress.
