Senior advisory committee discusses fall events, outreach and voter transportation

The Senior Resident Advisory Committee approved its agenda and May 11 minutes and spent the meeting outlining outreach and programming plans for older residents, including a possible booth at 4th of July activities, a mid‑October barbecue and volunteer rides to polling places.

Members asked staff to check available committee funds and communications materials so the group can staff a fair booth and distribute senior-focused information. One member suggested coordinating with the recreation department, which “provides programming for seniors,” and that the committee could help select programs and volunteer to support them.

The committee discussed a range of possible fall events: an outdoor movie night, themed gatherings (a “cowboy night”), simple social activities like dominoes or card games, and a catered afternoon event in Ward 3 to encourage local attendance. Several members volunteered to help staff events; the group agreed to pick potential dates and have staff verify venue availability and budgets.

Members also raised election access for older residents. With both the Aug. 4 and November elections approaching, a member asked about transportation options to polling places. Committee members said existing options appear limited and suggested recruiting insured volunteers to provide rides to polling locations.

The committee collected practical details during the discussion, including contact information for entertainment used at previous events (Thomas Winter, (636) 485‑2494). Staff were asked to report back with budget status and available materials at the next meeting.

The meeting closed after a Parks Department update and a motion to adjourn passed by voice vote.
