Resident asks council to revisit ordinance restricting backyard chickens

Nick Centerville: At the town hall Nick Centerville asked officials to reopen discussion on the township's poultry ordinance, saying neighboring towns allow a small number of hens in residential yards. "There are a large group of us who'd like to have chickens in Parsippany...the ordinance states that you have to have five acres," Centerville said, and described neighboring municipalities' rules permitting up to four chickens and no roosters.
Town response: The mayor said the administration has scheduled a meeting with the courts and town administration to review legal constraints and lot-size criteria. "We are meeting about that and we're looking into it to see what we can allow and what cannot be allowed," the mayor said, adding that determinations may be based on lot sizes and past court cases.
What residents should expect: No ordinance change was adopted at the town hall. The mayor said staff will review the issue and follow up; residents asking for a rule change should expect a report back after the administration's review.
