Meredith Fire Chief Ken Jones told the Select Board on May 11 that the Meredith Fire Department will take the lead on a black-granite 9/11 memorial and that a committee including firefighters, the American Legion and Selectperson Jeanie Forrester has been convened to plan a ceremony and unveiling timed for Sept. 11, 2026.
Chief Jones said fundraising has already exceeded the original cost estimate but acknowledged that some public records and media noted he "did not seek permission" to place the memorial on the Fire Department lawn. The Select Board reiterated that any memorial on town property must receive Select Board approval before placement. The board asked Chief Jones and staff to complete a final design and bring it to Town Manager Judie Milner by the June 8 Select Board meeting for formal review.
The department reported a supply-chain concern over shipping black granite from Italy, and the board and committee planned to track that schedule to ensure the memorial can be unveiled on the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11. No final site approval or formal vote on placement occurred at the May 11 meeting.
