The council discussed appointments to its roster of special magistrates and upcoming mediations.
Staff (Speaker 2) recommended adding Rafael Suarez Rivas and Richard Gendler to the village’s list of special magistrates and reappointing two existing magistrates whose terms were expiring. Counsel (Speaker 11) noted potential conflicts for two reappointed magistrates—Miss Hahn and Mr. Posner—on school‑speed‑zone hearings because of prior work or affiliations that create disqualification in those particular matters. Counsel also observed that a firm associated with Mr. Gendler previously represented a plaintiff in litigation involving the village but that the firm later withdrew; the council asked staff to vet potential conflicts before final appointment.
Counsel announced mediation dates: Arian Holdings v. Village of Wellington is set for June 24 at 10:00 a.m.; the Ayla Carroll matter is scheduled for July 30 at 9:30 a.m. Staff asked the council to designate members to attend those mediations as representatives; councilmembers discussed availability and indicated they would select delegates at the next meeting.
Compensation and qualification requirements were discussed briefly; counsel said magistrate services are paid and noted eligibility requirements under local rules and statutes for appointment.
