Chesapeake names 51 students to 2026 guaranteed teacher contract program

Mr. Mike Bailey, director of human resources, announced the recipients and congratulated students from Chesapeake Career Center and the district’s six high schools. He said the selection prioritized students pursuing high‑need areas such as special education, elementary education and mathematics.
Bailey noted there were about 71 applicants for 51 slots and introduced recipients by school and postsecondary affiliation; the division asked recipients and families to attend a post‑presentation reception. The program will pair recipients with pathways and mentors and aims to recruit locally grown candidates to return to Chesapeake classrooms.
The board recognized the awardees and invited them to meet members of the board on the floor; no formal vote was required for the recognition.
Program officials said they will continue planning and support as recipients progress toward employment in the district.
